Existing fatigue strain–vs.–life (e–N) data illustrate potentially significant effects of LWR coolant environments on the fatigue resistance of pressure vessel and piping steels. This report provides an overview of fatigue crack initiation in austenitic stainless steels in LWR coolant environments. The dislocation dipole accumulation model for fatigue crack initiation previously proposed by the authors is extended to an analysis of the fatigue strength reduction due to inclusions in high strength alloys. The initiation of a fatigue crack is determined by an energy criterion under the assumption that the crack initiation takes place when the self strain energy of dislocation dipoles.
Fatigue crack initiation and propagation in plain specimens of a sintered Si 3 N 4 have been investigated. The crack initiation was observed by the in situ observing system equipped with a scanning laser microscope. Micro-crack propagation behaviors of the plain specimens are compared with those of long cracks and semi-elliptical surface cracks. Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic.
A user-defined fatigue damage initiation criterion based on Smith, Watson, and Topper (SWT) parameter is implemented in ABAQUS to predict the fatigue crack initiation and life time. The residual stress effect on fatigue crack initiation of butt-welded plates is investigated by considering no effects of residuals stresses and by considering the. The two approaches in rubber fatigue analysis discussed in this study are the conventional crack initiation approach, based on continuum mechanics parameters versus life, and the crack growth approach, based on fracture mechanics parameters. These methodologies are demonstrated for a passenger vehicle engine mount here.

Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen.

In fact, it is common practice in many applications to approximate the total fatigue life by the duration of the crack initiation period. Fatigue crack initiation of metals and alloys is a very complex phenomenon which is influenced by many interacting parameters.
The process is impossible to describe precisely by macroscopic variables. Some assumptions based on the microscopic studies are needed to simplify the problem in order to solve a wide range of engineering problems. Fatigue Crack. A fatigue crack initiated in a gusset plate attachment set up the fatigue crack that propagated and allowed the air distributor pipe to break completely.

Crack initiation The formation of initial cracks preceding fatigue failure is a separate process consisting of four discrete steps in metallic samples. The material will develop cell structures and harden in response to the applied load.
This causes the amplitude of the applied stress to increase given the new restraints on strain. Book description. Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites.
In this chapter, attention is first directed at the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation in nominally defect-free (unnotched) pure metals and alloys, and commercial materials. Models for fatigue crack initiation are described and their significance and limitations are by: 6.

The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids/5(3).
of fatigue crack growth at Klevels below K c. The process of fatigue failure itself consists of several distinct processes involving initial cyclic damage (cyclic hardening or softening), formation of an initial ‘fatal’ flaw (crack initiation), macroscopic propagation of this flaw (crack growth), and final catastrophic failure or.
Introduction This book elucidates the correlation of fatigue crack growth data to multiscale cracking, particularly to the understanding of micrographs influenced by mechanical disturbance and thermodynamic variables.
Enhancing the resistance to crack initiation is one way of improving fatigue performance, necessitating the study on crack initiation mechanism.
To identify the formation mechanism of fatigue-induced surface damage that serves as embryonic cracks in UFG metals by ECAP, the studies have mostly been conducted in low cycle fatigue (LCF) regime under strain.
Fatigue crack growth in brittle ceramics and polymers are considered in Chapters 11 respectively. It is also pertinent at this juncture to clarify the terminology used Cited by: 1. Fatigue crack initiation. Fatigue cracks may initiate on the surface or at internal sites.
The initiation event may be associated with surface flaws, defects, slip steps, etc., which concentrate stress. Mechanism of fatigue crack initiation near the pore. We can analyze the Mechanism of fatigue crack initiation near the pore by Griffith theory. The diameter of the surface pores is about 70 µm, and the parallel width of the sample is 10 mm (shown in Fig.

Fatigue data book: light structural alloys ( Fatigue crack initiation mechanism In this study within the VHCF regime, the cyclic stress amplitudes are in the range – of the yield strength. Although the overall strain is in the purely elastic range, irreversible fatigue damages still occur at some special sites or even lead to fatigue failures.
One important concept in expanding the applicability domain of fatigue test data is the Similarity Principle which implies that high cycle fatigue at a local surface is governed by the local stress field.
Consequently, according to the similarity principle, the Wöhler curve of an unnotched material can be directly applied to a notched specimen.
